The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Young Canadians Challenge

As part of The Scots Highland Company we would encourage our senior members to enroll in the award. We have two internationally trained leaders for The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in the Company to help guide participants through the Award. The age range for the Awards is 14 to 25 years old. This would apply to senior members and Leadership Corps.

The Award Programme is about challenge. It is also about providing the opportunity to accept a challenge. The Award offers young people the opportunity to set a personal goal and achieve it. Along the way, they learn about themselves and about qualities like responsibility, trust and the ability to plan and organize themselves.

The Awards are designed in ascending standard of achievement: 'Bronze', 'Silver', 'Gold' levels. Each standard provides for training achievement, and recognition in the basics of good citizenship. A wide variety of interests is embraced, including physical activities, educational training, self discipline, and service to the community - all designed to advance the physical, mental and spiritual welfare of the young people.

The Awards are based on four sections which include Service, Expeditions, Skills and Physical Recreation. Each section has its own aim:

-Service: to learn how to give useful service to others.
-Expeditions: To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery.
-Skills: To encourage the development of personal interests and practical skills.
-Physical Recreation: To encourage participation in physical recreation and improvement of performance.

At the Gold level there is an additional section, the Residential Project, which aims to broaden experience through involvement with others in a residential setting.

There is a provincial registration fee of $30.00. If you are interested in the Award please contact Tim Shutt at 492-3612(H) or Matthew Newton at 444-6423(H). Cheques should be made to The Scots Highland Company, and mailed to:
